Extreme Reader

Extreme Reader Challenge - 50 books in 50 weeks.

I have participated since the inception in 2019 by Tacoma Public Library. Each year they provide 55 categories that range from 'has a red cover' to 'a Hugo Award winner'.

Below are this year's categories and the books I've read - with a little book review. The list will be updated as I complete the books. Want to join in?

Fair Market Value by Hailey Edwards

I love books with different takes on a genre. She runs A Body Shop which includes both fixing cars and letting ghosts inhabit bodies to finish regrets before moving on.

Bad Badger by Maryrose Wood

A fun novella about a badger who befriends a crow and tries to discover is he a good, bad or maybe not a badger at all.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional World by Charles Yu

This was sci-fi with philosophy and spun my brain in little circles. Charles Yu is the main character in this book about a time machine repairman who find a book he wrote in the future or maybe has he's living it and give it to his past...confusing, yeah it is, but a worthy read for some.

4. Author born in the same month as you

The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer | Goodreads

Believe this would fall into magical realism as a little bit of supernatural flows through the various stories and lives related to the disappearance of a little boy.

Well written.

6. Author you would recommend to a friend

Murder at the Merton Library by Andrea Penrose

Penrose's Regency fiction mystery couples are a cozy read for me. I'd recommend for anyone who is a fan of the genre.

This particle series: Wrexford and Sloane, involves a grumpy Lord, a widow who is secretly a political cartoonist, their two wards and a host of other lovable characters.

A Little Devil in America: Notes in Praise of Black Performance by Hanif Abdurraqib | Goodreads

A great reflection of the influence and contributions of black performances in the US. It is more than history as it is filled with emotion and understanding.

35. On your to be read list for a long time

All the Crooked Saints

Maggie Stiefvater

I bought this book when it came out in 2017. I tried to start it, but it was confusing and not what I expected, so I put it aside. I am no listening to the audio book. It falls into the magical realism category and reminds me of the movie Encanto. The Soria family had fled Mexico and ended up in Colorado. People come to them for miracles to rid themselves of darkness, but the miracles are not what they seem.

45. Standalone you wish had a sequel

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

Dark Fantasy - Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold on the edge of Fairie.
A glass coffin in the woods rests on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.  Until one day, he does…

I would have enjoyed another book set in this world, but it does fill this category.

Winter Lost

Patricia Briggs

Book 14 in the Mercy Thompson series. One of my favorite urban fantasy worlds. This one has a unique spin as it is closed circle mystery. A little jumpier than most of them, but always a solid read.
